Re: 3.0 killer
For the hub it that is a washer that you need to pull out then I believe behind that is another nut.

Re: 3.0 killer
Yea just use a thin pick...here is a quick write up I found on the net for you.
Next, use the appropriate hub socket to remove the outer spindle nut. Then, with a screwdriver/dental picks or fingers, pull the spindle washer out. Then remove the inner spindle nut as well. With this removed the hub itself will slide right off the spindle. If you are concerned about the bearings, be careful, the outer hub bearing isn’t attached to anything and will fall out the front of the hub.

Re: 3.0 killer
Exactly. Remember, there is an inner and an outer hub nut. the inner has a tit on it that lines up with the washer with the holes once you get the preload right.. Also, when the axle is together, you need to pull the rotors off, then the spindles, then the axles out, then you can get the knuckles off without having to cut the ball joints off.. If you get good at the junk yard, you can get the complete knuckles off by disassembling the ujoints... Good thing is the ball joints aren't expensive and fairly easy to replace.. Autozone has a ball joint tool of you don't have a press.. just need a deposit. There is a specific upper and lower... Also, that carrier is fine.. j/k.. Dayum that thing is broken.. Holy crap..

yeah, I planned on replacing the ball joints anyway, they were pretty much toast already. Figured cutting them wasn't a big deal.

Re: 3.0 killer
Started to pull the 60 apart. Got stuck, don't have the right tools, but I got the gears out!
gotta get a socket for this nut
anyone know if these are studs or bolts through here? either way, they're just spinning in the housing. won't come out. I broke the bolts or the studs loose, whatever they are, instead of the nut :smack:
axles out

Re: 3.0 killer
Chris, you know what size socket I need for that outter nut? Looks like a 2 1/2 or 2 5/8s. Also, you happen to know the size of the pinion nut on the 60s?

Re: 3.0 killer
ja if it a ford rear then that nut in the full floater is a 2 9/16 i bought mine at kragen for like 15 napa has them for around 30. once you take the brake drums off you can access the backside of the nut and bolt to remove them. also make sure and bend that tab back up or the nut wont spin

yeah, I don't know about the wheel bearing nut size, but I used a 34 mm socket for the pinion nut, IIRC.

Re: 3.0 killer
Got some updates, nothing much, but its progress.
A little bodywork got done:
Got the axle housings completely stripped. A lot of these pics are just for reference, to get them back together. Next up is gearing and locking them!
gotta find a 10 bolt carrier though, or a full locker. The carrier in this one is split in half. Need to rebuild the whole braking system in both as well. All the springs and what not are nearly rusted away. Picked up a booster and M/c for the conversion from heep70 as well

Re: 3.0 killer
yeah, got a few little things done. Got the GM M/C mounted, got the spring perches, the gears, and the brake parts ordered for the 60.
May be scrapping my plans for the 10 bolt, and just going with a 60. Found one in decent shape, just trying to work with the guy right now.

Re: 3.0 killer
Kinda been on hold lately, due to not being sure I was going to have a job as of July 1. Here's what I've aquired in the meantime, so the project will start moving forward very soon!
Picked up some hummer beadlocks, need to recenter them
Got some tires from snoshoebrue Thanks Justin!
My gears:
A hanger that Justin found in Sac, the guy also had a drag link and a pitman arm for the 10bolt to toyota conversion
Also picked up a driveshaft flange for the D60, and a rockcrusher diff cover

Re: 3.0 killer
Spent some time at PnP this morning, got the spider gears I needed and a couple of extra rear shafts, just in case. Spent some time today cleaning up the brakes, and getting them ready for tommorow. A buddy is supposed to come by and help me install the gears, if all goes will, the truck will be back on 4 wheels tommorow

the shafts should be the same im almost sure. its the gears/casing that are a little different. 3.07 or 3.55s.
thats cool you got that front. the little extra money your going to spend was the money you were gunna spend fixing the broken front, trust me. so figure all the times you were going to break in the future, you just about got rid of.
[/quote]
they turned out to be, but at the time I wasn't sure.
Here's some updated progress pics, axle didn't get hung, gears didn't get installed, but I got a ton of stuff cleaned up and painted, and welded the perches on the rear end.
My painter
My new front axle. I'll start tearing it down as soon as the rear is done.

Housing all cleaned up and mostly painted
Brake drums and rear diff cover courtesy of Charlotte
Thats it for now. Brought my brakes into work, gonna put them all together, and hopefully get the rear end buttoned up for the most part on wed.

thanks dude! Appreciate it. Yeah, I'm most likely handing it off to a buddy on wed so he can install the gears for me. Should get it back early next week, and then it'll go under the truck. Once its in, the only thing I have to do with the rear is order up the brake lines, and mount the shocks (if I run some )
