Tig vs. Mig ?
I have a pretty good collection of equipment going right now and generally try to purchase one big machine a year. So this year I'm toying with the idea of buying and learning how to tig weld
What are your guys thoughts ?
For those with a Mig and Tig, how often are you picking up the torch vs the gun ?

Re: Tig vs. Mig ?
Rj with your fab skills you would catch on to tig easy. I had a hard time at it and I am not good at it YET. I took a class at crc and they taught arc mig and tig, but he also has just a mig tig class. We did not get a long time to practice on both. I am sure they have a machine out there that does mig, arc, and plasma. I would not be surprised if they have one that does all of it, but when I was in school they didnt have a machine in class that could handle the high frequency for all arch, mig, plasma, and tig on one machine. I found that with tig it was hard to get the foot pedal just right to lay a bead. Also when I tried to weld aluminum it was very eazy to just blast thru with tig. Tig is sort of like gas welding, pushing the weld pool. The only huge advantage I see with tig is welding aluminum.

Re: Tig vs. Mig ?
Tig makes really nice tiny and extremly strong welds the downfalls are that it is tedious and the heat can temper the metal and cause britle metal next to the welds. That being said I loved tig welding but its aplications are limited.
