Diff Armor welding on

I am going to weld on some diff gaurds the full ones from allpro and want to know if anyone has done this can it be done on the car or does the third need to be pulled? any advice I would like to just weld it on on the vehicle.

You can weld it, but make sure your bearings and seals aren't jeopardized

I know someone who just welded his on his truck. Haven't heard of any issues since.

You'll be ok, just do it! Yes

Take your time and let it cool some between passes so you don't overheat the oil in the diff. You can change it afterwards if you'd like. If you don't change it it's no big deal. Just remember that the next time you pull it apart it will smell pretty funky and you'll have to remember why so you don't panic and start lookin for problems that aren't there. duh

my shop teacher said if your welding on your axle put wet rags on the wheel bearings and if you could take the brake lines out it is an extra saftey so that the current doesnt try to ground thru your brake lines.

If you are just welding the diff guard no problem.
Weld 1" at a time on either side, let cool, weld more.
The only time you need to be careful is if you are welding on new perches with the full weight of the vehicle on the axle, it may warp.

I (dave) welded my 8" pipe cap on in a single pass.

OK so the diff gaurd is no problem then. I also have gussets for the knuckle balls so I am gathering that I should weld these with no weight on the vehicle I dont plan on putting very much bead on the knuckle portion more on the tube cause it has to hold the new shock mount. But will I destroy the seals in the knuckle or should I dissasemble it first any thoughts?

I welded mine "in-truck". No problem. I smelled the oil, but that could have just been the air heating and escaping through the vent. I change my oil after every water crossing (about once or twice a year). I have the same diff guards, but I bought mine from trail-gear for half the cost ($30.00).
