2 Associates'?????? Empty 2 Associates'??????

Post by Guest Tue Jan 05, 2010 2:42 pm

So I get my Associates' Degree in Criminal Justice in April (last class ends ON my birthday hehe).

I'm thinking about getting another Associates' in Technology - Web Design. This will constitute taking a mere 6 more classes on top of what I've already taken for my Criminal Justice program.

Do you think it'll be worth my while to go for the second Associates' (in the end, having degrees in Criminal Justice and Technology/Web Design) rather than going on for my Bachelors' in Criminal Justice?

I want to learn the web design anyway, so I may take the classes for my own sake, but what good are two Associates' degrees versus 1 Bachelors'?

I'm thinking I could use both degrees at once in a career, but those jobs I'm sure are few and far between.

Help meeeeeeeee!!!!

To specifically answer your question, a bachelors degree in one subject is far more beneficial than multiple associates degrees, when you're looking at a particular field.

If you are seriously looking at a long time career in the law enforcement field (police officer or prison guard with opportunity for promotion) I would definitely go for the Bachelors degree.

Example:
I have an AA in Fire Technology. My current job does not require a degree, but in order to promote from Captain to Battalion Chief, a Bachelors degree is required. As of right now, my moving up in the ranks is limited due to the fact that don't have my degree (not that I'd be moving up that soon anyway gap )

There are other departments that require BS or BAs to promote to Captain, which is a further limiter.

I'd definitely pursue the web design if that is something that interests you, but that may be something better done after you finish your Bachelors degree, or on the side.

Additionally, if is far easier to do schoolwork now, before you move into the career, and get busy (or busier) with life, and also, its easier to finish it when you do it all at once, rather than returning to it later.

Thanks Jason - I appreciate your insight on this. You have a good point.

Right now, I'm just torn as to whether or not I want to go $26k more into debt to get my Bachelors', or pursue something with my AA.

yeah, the $$ part is always rough. Something to consider as well, is depending on the job you're looking at, they may offer educational incentives to better yourself. So although it may be harder to do the schooling, it may be cheaper on you in the long run.

Ex:

We get x amount of dollars every year to spend on education pertaining to the fire service. It can be specific fire classes (sawyer, rescue systems, etc.) or it can be put toward a degree that would benefit our career. (fire science, management, etc.)

Many municipalities offer this, as a way to get their employees to continue to better themselves.
