Grooving Tires..

Post by lil-bronc on Thu Feb 28, 2008 1:35 am

Well, I have traded my 39.5 Iroks for a set of 42 TSLs.

I have started grooving the tires, basically cutting the lug in to threes. I like the pattern and think it will really work. Based on other write ups on the internet. I even have a nice groover, borrowed from a friend. But I am one hour in to the first tire and have about 15 minutes left on it. It is not that difficult just time consuming. I am going to try to finish them this weekend. I will weigh what I have taken off the tire to see the actual weight of the tire when I am all done.

Anyone want to help???

one suggestion would be to aim a heater toward the next tire you are gonna groove. Also let the groover heat up really hot between tires so you start every tire super hot

The groover I am using works really well...

Get very hot, I am just cutting a lug three times. The tires are basically new, which makes the lugs 27/32" deep. So, I am basically cutting each cut about three times. Not to difficult, tiring, yes....

Need to stop complaining and get back in the garage and grooving...

No, problem. I will let you practice on mine. I have two tires left to do. It is taking about 90 minutes per tire. Not that hard, forearm gets sore, but just time consuming..

The tool I am using, which I have heard is one of the better ones. But I have only tried this one.

I believe I have seen it cost anywhere from $350 to $600. I believe it can sipe as well. It also came with another blade that was wider. It really does cut the rubber fairly easy.

I have a feeling that I will not be that eager to go with 44's, just to avoid doing this anytime soon. It does appear that the lugs will be able to grab a lot better. But we will see soon enough.

Do you know if increased siping/groving will cause quicker tread wear? I know the traction is important but since I drive on the road alot its important to me. Although at that price I probably wont be doning any groving any time soon!

I don't know if grooving and/or siping will affect tire life.

I would have to think that it wouldn't affect the tire life, as the tire life is really decided on the rubber compound. Grooving might make the tire noise less, siping will definitely quiet your tires. The SSR version is very similar to the TSL, other than it is siped.

Overall, that is a good question and I can only assume without any really life experience.

Yea I am pretty sure your right, I cant see it causing undue wear since every street tire has small blocks and plenty of siping for the most part.... Im sure it has more to do with the rubber compound... Ill have to keep an eye out on ebay and see if I can find a decent one, what brand is yours?
